Consul General Ma Zhanwu Attends the 80th Anniversary of Sending Indian Medical Team to China

Mr. Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata, attended the 80th Anniversary of Sending Indian Medical Team to China held by Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis Memorial Committee on 1 September 2018 in West Bengal. More than 100 people including Mr. Sugata Bose, Lok Sabha MP , Mr. Mrigendranath Gantait, President of the memorial committee , and Consular Attache Zhou Yaoyao, were present.

Consul General Ma Zhanwu said in his speech that he thought highly of Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis Memorial Committee for conducting the memorial activity and expressed sincere thanks to the Indian friends attending the activity , which demonstrated their friendly affection towards the Chinese people. In 1938, Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis went to North China with his medical team at the risk of losing their life to help the Chinese people fight against Japanese invaders, which was a vivid demonstration of “ a friend in need is a friend indeed. ”

Mr. Ma continued to say that we should always remember the great contribution by the Indian medical team, carry on and promote the great spirit of selfless dedicaion by pushing forward friendly cooperation and exchanges between China and India. The consulate was ready to work with the Memorial Committee to hold more memorial activities to promote and publicize the medical team's spirit.

Consul General Ma Zhanwu pointed out that the success of the informal meeting in Wuhan by President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi in April 2018 has ushered in a new chapter in China-India relations. There are huge potentials for cooperation in fields like economic development, cultural and social exchanges between China and India and the Consulate hoped to work with friends in West Bengal to promote cooperation and exchanges between China and this State so as to make more contribution to China-India friendship, which would be a very good way to commemerate the Indian medical team.

Mr. Sugata Bose and Mr. Mrigendranath Gantait introduced the historic background, contribution and historical significance of sending to China Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis and his medical team. They emphasized that people in the two counteies should inherit the medical team's spirit and promote India-China relations in various fields and enhance friendship between the two great nations. Besides, they proposed establishing a permanent memorial hall and include the story in textbooks in the two countries.

Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis Memorial Committee has more than 600 members from the urban and rural areas in West Bengal, who would hold memorial activities every year.
